#10 Thomas Harris

Thomas Harris is probably the greatest thriller author of all time. His hannibal lecter character and his novels such as black Sunday and cari mora are great dark sickly inspirations to the world.
#9 Richard Matheson

Storys such as I am legend,The incredible shrinking man and hell house are great classics that should never be forgotten. He gave us a terrifying apocalyptic view in I Am Legend with the world being overrun with vampires and showing us that in the eyes of the monsters we are monsters to them. He also started Steven Speilberg one of the great American directors careers with 1973s Dual. He also has given us one of the most memorable episodes on TV in the form of the twilight zone episode nightmare at 20 000 feet which is the most famous twilight zone episode.
#8 Robert R Mcammon

With storys such as Swan song and boys life and underrated gems such as Gone South and Ushers passing this man is a terrific author with scary unique visions. His most unique story is ushers passing which is a continuation of one of edgar allan poe's most memorable storys the fall of the house of usher. While not being as known as other authors his visions will still chill you to the bone.
#7 Anne Rice

Anne rice is the master of modern vampires and that is a understatement because she truly is the master of modern vampires. The vampire chronicles helped pave the way for scary vampires today while everyone else like stephanie meyer is just turning them sparkly non bloodsucker teenage romantic angst bullcrap. A couple of her books have been made into cult classic vampire movies such as interview with the vampire based on her first vampire novel interview with the vampire. If you like European scary vampires she may be a dark inspiration to you.
#6 Joe Hill

While Joe is not as good as his dad Stephen king he still has the Gene's to make some terrifying storys. All his books are great bestsellers and a couple have been comic books movies and even TV shows. To describe Joe hill is by saying read his stuff cause he might be the future master of horror.
#5 Dean Koontz

Dean koontz is one of the highest selling authors of all time because almost all his books are considered great and he makes so many. While his books haven't translated well to movies or comics he is still an iconic figure with great storys such as the odd thomas series and the bad place he can always tell a biblically great story.
#4 Clive Barker

This author/painter/director/screenwriter/comics writer/comics illustrator/illustrator/film producer/film executive producer/game maker is probably one of the coolest icons in dark imagination. He invented dark fantasy and came up with the term dark imaginer and has made some of the greatest horror books and movies of all time such as his books The hellhound heart,The thief of always and the great and secret show and in movies he has produced candyman and the midnight meat train and directed the movies Hellraiser,Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions. He has also helped with the understated video games undyingandn Jericho. His books have had comic book spin offs which are kick ass such as the great and secret show,Hellraiser, Hellraiser Dark Watch,The thief of always,Nightbreed, Jihad,Saint Sinner,The yattering and jack and an original story called next testament. He is the master of the dark fantastic and the former future of horror.
#3 Stephen King

What the master of horror isnt number one well of course he ain't. While he has written great books that have been turned into great movies and comics and crappy games hejusts doesn't hold candle to these next 2 albeit if you haven't read him then go read all his books.
#2 H.P Lovecraft

Yes everyones favorite racist man is not number 1 because hes racist and his storys may be confusing and only one of his monsters affected culture. Just no not number 1
#1 Edgar Allan Poe

Arguably the second greatest author of all time. Poe has inspired generations of authors with storys such as the telltale heart, the pit and the pendulum, the fall of the house of usher, the black cat,the raven, the cask of the contillado and of course that masque of the red death. Poe is an author who should never be forgotten.
